How to Reset a Forgotten Root Password

Forgetting your server password is no cause for panic — there are usually a few ways to reset it.

Option 1: reset via console

Many cloud panels offer a "reset password" feature. Power off, set a new password in the panel, and reboot to apply. This is the simplest way.

Option 2: VNC / rescue mode

If the console has no direct reset, log in via VNC or boot into rescue mode, mount the system disk and reset with passwd root. This needs some Linux know-how — proceed carefully.

Option 3: ask support

If you're unsure about the above, the safest route is to contact 00Shark support @aliyun370 with your server details, and we'll help reset it securely.

After resetting

  • Set a sufficiently complex new password;
  • Switch to SSH key login and disable password login for better security;
  • Store the password safely, ideally in a password manager.

Tip: if you have important data, confirm a backup exists before resetting.
